Other Tests Available

It is recommended that applicants take the IELTS test as it gives the most accurate and most detailed profile of the candidate’s proficiency. However, if it is impossible for potential students to take the IELTS test, there are other commercial tests of English available. Students should make sure that they take a test of academic English such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the University of Michigan MELAB test, the University of Reading TEEP test or the University of Warwick WELT test.

Tests of general English such as those set by University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) or other testing organisations should not be used for direct entry to degree courses. See : Examinations for more information on these examinations.

Approximate equivalences between the IELTS test and others and length of English study needed, based on Allan (1992); Blue and Weir (1985); Bool, Dunmore, & Tonkyn, (1999), British Council (1994); Carroll and West (1989); Clapham and Wall (1990); Davies and West (1984); Educational Testing Service (1992, 2004a, 2004b); English Language Testing Service (1987); IELTS (1995, p. 27); Ingram (1977); Light, Xu & Mossop (1987); Tannenbuam & Wiley (2008); Tonkyn (1995) are given below. Correlations between the various English language tests, however, must be seen as approximate as these tests are usually designed to measure different aspects of English language proficiency.
