Assessment: Examinations Overseas

Assessing EAP

Overseas Qualifications

It is essential when interpreting overseas school qualifications to distinguish between foreign language qualifications and native language (or mother tongue) qualifications. There is a big difference, as far as competence is concerned, between the GCSE in French and the GCSE in English of a UK student.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong Certificate of Education (HKCEE)

English Language (Syllabus B)

This is comparable to low GCSE (Grades A, B, C).

B should therefore be required for most university courses, but a ‘A’ may be required for linguistically more exacting courses and a C may be adequate for others.

English Language (Syllabus A)

Considered to be at a lower level than syllabus B – should not be accepted.

Hong Kong Advanced Level Examinations (HKALE)

Use of English (A-level)

Listening, Writing, Reading and Language Skills, Practical Skills, Overall Grade.

Grades A to C are generally comparable to GCSE (grades A, B, & C).

Grade C should normally be required with grade B for linguistically more exacting courses. Grade D may be adequate for some courses.

Malaysia

SPM English 122 & English 322

These examinations are not recognised outside Malaysia.

English 1119

Students can take Cambridge English Language O level (previously English 121, now English 1119) as an additional subject. Grades A to C are generally comparable to GCSE (grades A, B, & C).
