Reg gets very angry. He says if Paul wants to complain about him he should tell him to his face. At lunch he leaves the office early and gets back late. When he comes in Paul is waiting for him, and says: 'Where have you been? The planning meeting begins in five minutes and you've got the file I need to present my idea on re-organisation.' Reg looks a bit drunk. He throws the file down on the floor at Paul's feet and shouts: 'Re-organisation. Re-organisation. Your bright business college ideas again. Well we don't need them here! This is the Civil Service, not Harvard, mate. You might impress the secretaries and one or two of your university friends upstairs, but you don't impress me!' Now Paul is angry too. He shouts: 'You're drunk! Now pick up that file and let me get to my meeting.' Reg answers: 'Drunk? Me drunk? I was working here when you were still in school and I've never picked anything off this floor for anyone! But I'll give you something you need . . .' and he hits Paul in the face. Paul looks upset but does not hit back. He picks up the file and goes to the planning meeting without another word. Reg sits down at his desk and puts his head in his hands. What are you going to do? |
