There are thought to be around 6000 distinct languages in the world. The world's largest language is Chinese - it has more native speakers than any other - followed by English, Hindi/Urdu, Spanish and Arabic, as parts of Figure 10.1 and Table 10.1 show. The most popular foreign language is English (Montgomery, 2004), which is spoken in many European Union states as Figure 10.2 shows. |
