You have pointed out to Robin that there is a lot of room for improvement in his work. He is not happy to hear this but seems to want to talk things over, even so. You spend that lunchtime in the office going through his recent work trying, as diplomatically as you can, to suggest more effective ways of doing things. Robin does not continue with his application for a new job, and you do not see him and his wife so often. The Wednesday evening bridge sessions stop, but you still enjoy a pint with him now and again at lunchtime. However, it has become a great deal easier to disagree with him over business matters and to discuss freely the pros and cons of important decisions. You feel his work is slowly improving, and find yourself freer to get on with your own job without constantly having to check his. That is the end of this maze. You might want to discuss the relationship between business and personal life, and question whether, in your experience, colleagues make good friends. |
